METIS secure multi-million-pound contract with RAF 2 Jan 2020
METIS Aerospace, based on the Lincoln Science and Innovation Park, have secured a multi-million-pound contract to provide cutting-edge drone detection technology to the Royal Air Force. Through industry partner Leonardo UK, METIS will deliver four baseline systems, including spares and support. The systems will be tested and tailored to the RAF’s requirements during a three-year contract as part of their wider research and development programme.
METIS will deliver the SKYPERION drone detection and directional-finding capability. The system monitors airspace for radio frequency signals. When the radio frequency signature of a drone is detected, SKYPERION alerts the operator. It can then locate both a drone and its pilot to assist in the disruption of unauthorised drone activity. As a scalable and autonomous system, SKYPERION works independently or can integrate with other anti-drone capabilities to form part of a layered solution.
The contract award brings a successful year for METIS Aerospace to a close. Tony Burnell, CEO, states that ‘the year’s achievements are testament to the hard work and dedication shown by the METIS team. After three years of research and development we are now looking forward to delivering our drone detection capability across the globe’. After securing a contract with Gatwick airport in January, METIS are delivering market-leading drone detection technology to commercial and a number of military markets. The success has enabled the company to double in size during 2019, with another exciting and promising year ahead.
