Electronic Warfare and military communications are key in-theatre resources. User demands dictate the design in these areas. Taking into account factors such as the need to optimise size, weight, power and cost, changing in-theatre demands and the ability to make effective use of the spectrum (an increasingly limited resource). Any deployed system must be autonomous, scalable and upgradeable.

The need for wideband performance across the spectrum is a core requirement for electronic warfare. The Electronic Warfare Enhancement Act in the US was introduced to refocus US EW efforts. It recognised that the ability to make effective use of the spectrum is essential, thereby enabling continued operations.

Operational trends in the Electronic Warfare (EW) sector are driven by increasing demands on the spectrum environment.  These demands include the need to counter agile radar systems, utilisation of network-based IP-centric communications in warfare scenarios and combatting threats from improvised explosive devices triggered remotely.

In these cases, operators need to be aware of an increasing amount of frequencies. Future systems will need to employ flexible wideband materials that can enable cognitive analysis of the threat environment. Allowing effective control of the electromagnetic spectrum.
